Overcoming Challenges - Panel Discussion

Women constantly face challenges when it comes to their careers and establishing their identities - from patriarchy, gender biases, harassment to family responsibilities and restrictions. How have women photographers and visual artists navigated these situations? 'Overcoming Challenges' is a panel that aims to discuss these issues that women continually experience and how they attempt to overcome them. The panel will be open to all.

About our Panelists:

Amrita Samant A Sony Artisan and Profoto mentor, she is one of the most recognised and published photographers based in India and Singapore. An absolute natural when it comes to portraying children in their element, her versatility varies from doing portraits to documenting the lives of families with realism. When she isn’t shooting her little baby clients, she is working on non-profit projects to make this world a better place for them.

Anita Sathiam discovered her love for photography soon after she was diagnosed with cancer, and her illness led her to pursue a documentary project on cancer victims. She has not only survived her illness but also several obstacles that came her way and continued to follow her passion for photography in remote villages. She has worked with legendary film-maker Adoor Ghopalakrishnan on two Malayalam movies as a cinematographer.

Parvathi Nayar a Chennai-based contemporary visual artist is known for her multidisciplinary art, centred on complex drawing practices, video, installations and photography. Her black-and-white graphite drawings are multifaceted works that look at the internal/intimate spaces within our bodies, and the external/public spaces in which we live, often through the prism of science and technology. Her art talks about different engagements with our environment, and the philosophies of inhabiting them.

Rathika Ramasamy she is arguably one of India’s foremost wildlife photographers. In documenting birds and animals through her photographs, she has developed a style of technical excellence combined with a captivating story. Rathika has been travelled most of the national parks in India and African forests. For wildlife photography is not only for her a passion, but a powerful medium to help conserve nature. Her work has been appreciated and featured in several national and international publications as well as exhibitions. She is based in Chennai, India. Through her photography, she tries to bring nature close to the viewer. She regularly conducts Wildlife Photography workshops and gives talks all over India.

About the moderator:

Shannon Zirkle is a skilled photojournalist who has applied her artistic and photographic talents to editorial, corporate, portrait and wedding photography. She looks for the stories and incidentals many photographers miss. The shy flower girl; the happy but tearful woman who cheers for her son, the quiet eyes of a father parting from his daughter; the corporate office whose wall holds a tiny but powerful poem. These are the kinds of stories Shannon tells through her camera.
