About the event

Top of the Gorge Walking Challenge
Saturday 7th June 2025 - 10:30 start

8.25 Mile Walk around the stunning Cheddar Gorge

Entry Fee: £22.00 + Booking fee

The Top of the Gorge Walking Challenge is a traditional self-navigated circular walking event that circumnavigates the iconic Cheddar Gorge from its upper reaches in Velvet Bottom right down to the beautiful Somerset town of Cheddar.

The walk will take you along the top of the gorge’s southern cliffs from Warren Farm via Black Rock to Cheddar where you’ll be treated to a brew and cake from the Cheddar Bakery before returning back via the cliffs on the northern side and Velvet Bottom. Over the course of the 8.25 miles you be treated to stunning views of the gorge and its dramatic cliffs as well as views across the Somerset Levels to Glastonbury Tor, Brent Knoll, The Quantock Hills and Crook Peak. Don’t forget to stop and utilise the many information boards placed by the National Trust and the Longleat Estate to find out more about the gorge’s history, geology, flora and fauna.

Cheddar Gorge is one of England’s most iconic and spectacular landscapes. We are really proud to work with the National Trust, Longleat Estate, Somerset Wildlife Trust and Warren Farm to showcase this spectacular gorge and we hope that you will enjoy exploring it while competing the challenge.

At almost 400 feet deep and three miles long, this is England’s largest gorge, and with its weathered crags and pinnacles, one of our most spectacular natural sights. The gorge would have begun forming about one million years ago during the last Ice Age when water from melting glaciers formed a river, which over time started to carve into the limestone rock creating the steep cliffs you see today. The Cheddar Yeo River gradually made its way underground, creating the famous Cheddar Caves.
