Featured soloists for this performance are: Georgeanne Robinson, soprano; Douglas Dodson, countertenor; Christopher Reames, tenor; Matthew Hoch, bass. Organist Karla Fowkes and concertmaster Sheri Peck will be featured in the opening movement of Canata BWV 96.
David Long, comments, “With these Cantata concert, the Bach Choir celebrates Bach’s many years as Thomaskantor, director of church music, in the city of Leipzig, where he was responsible for composing a Cantata for each Sunday of the Liturgical year. Our performance of Bach’s Cantata BWV 169 is a Chattanooga premiere. The work, scored for alto solo and orchestra, begins with an exuberant instrumental sinfonia featuring prominent virtuosic solos for violin and organ. Cantata BWV 96 is scored for chorus, soloists and orchestra and features a lively dancing opening chorale fantasia highlighted by a virtuoso part for sopranino recorder. Further movements feature a tenor solo with flute while the Cantata concludes with a stately four-part chorale for chorus and orchestra.”
“We are pleased to present these concerts featuring one of Bach’s over 200 sacred cantatas for chorus, soloists and instruments and performed on or close to the specific liturgical day for which it was written. We hope these performances of Bach’s inspiring music will provide Chattanooga music lovers with an hour of beauty and respite on a Sunday afternoon.”
