The next film in the series, Hoop Dreams (1994), is presented by Crandell Executive Director and filmmaker Mirissa Neff. Neff will have a post-film Zoom discussion with Arthur Agee and William Gates, the groundbreaking documentary’s stars.

“Hoop Dreams had a profound effect on me, long before I became a documentary filmmaker,” says Neff. “It’s imbued with raw honesty about American life, as well as thrilling turns on the basketball court. I rewatch the film on an almost yearly basis, and can’t wait to screen it at the Crandell, just in time for March Madness.” The event takes place, in fact, on “Selection Sunday,” which marks the official start of March Madness by unveiling the 68-team bracket for the annual NCAA tournament.

Agee and Gates, two 14-year-old Black students from inner-city Chicago, have dreams of playing for the NBA. Both show great potential and are actively recruited by top private schools as they enter high school. They start off at the same school, but their lives take divergent paths from that point on. The groundbreaking film follows the pair through four years of trials and tribulations: injuries, slumps, family issues and the never-ending battle to maintain their grades. Through it all, their hoop dreams continue.

Mirissa Neff is the executive director of the Crandell Theatre, and a documentary filmmaker and television and radio journalist. Her feature-length documentary This Is National Wake premiered in competition at Sheffield DocFest and has won awards at film festivals around the world.
