- **Event Description**: Paul Tynan, one of Canada's very best trumpet players will our Island Jazz feature this week, in trio format with Ian Toms guitar and Chris Martell bass.  

Paul won the 2018 ECMA for "Jazz Recording of the Year" for his album with partner Aaron Lington entitled Bicoastal Collective: Chapter Five.   Also a past Downbeat award winner, The International Trumpet Guild has stated that his “Creative Genius Shines”.  Paul’s trumpet playing is rich with an esoteric sense of harmonic color and playful rhythmic textures. Full of creative interplay, his music is inspired by the rich tapestry we call Earth.

Presently a Full Professor of music at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Paul Tynan teaches jazz trumpet, jazz history, and arranging. He also co-leads the “BiCoastal Collective”, with Grammy winning saxophonist Aaron Lington, dedicated to performing new jazz compositions across North America.  Paul has released ten recordings as a leader/co-leader on the Origin/OA2, Armored, and NohJoh labels.

Paul has performed with numerous jazz artists such as The Pacific Mambo Orchestra, Chris Potter, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Jerry Bergonzi, Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely, Joel Frahm, and Matt Wilson.  As a jazz recording artist he has appeared on over sixty recordings as a trumpet player, composer, arranger, and/or producer along side musicians like Lynn Seaton, Marcus Wolfe, Stockton Helbing, David Braid, Joel Fountain, Bobby Selvaggio, Kenny Werner, Kenny Wheeler, Dan Haerle, Ben Street, and Jamey Haddad.  Paul has also served on the faculties of San Jose State University, Chabot College, the Nova Scotia Honor Jazz Program, and the University of North Texas Summer Trumpet Workshop and is a past co-director of the Acadia Summer Jazz Workshop.  Paul received his Masters in jazz studies from University of North Texas where he was a teaching fellow in jazz improvisation, large jazz ensembles and a member of the internationally acclaimed, Grammy nominated One O’Clock Lab Band. Paul is an Edwards Trumpet and Flugel Horn Artist
