UVA University Singers America250 concert & Celebration of Prof. Michael Slon’s 25th anniversary

The UVA University Singers, the University of Virginia’s flagship choral ensemble, invite you to join them Friday, April 10th at 8:00 pm in Old Cabell Hall for a special spring concert 2026, featuring music celebrating America’s 250th and Virginia’s connection to the founding of our country. The program will include settings of Jefferson’s words “We Hold These Truths” by Todd Frazier, and emeritus faculty composer Judith Shatin (the latter work first performed during a visit of Mikhail Gorbachev to the Lawn in 1993.) In addition, excerpts from Randall Thompson’s Testament of Freedom and A Concord Cantata (depicting the first battle of the Revolutionary War), H.T. Burleigh’s arrangement of “My Lord What a Morning”, work of early American composer George Bristow (accompanied by a short documentary by Eduardo Montes–Bradley), and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” fill out the program.

The concert is led by UVA faculty conductor Michael Slon, and the weekend will also honor 4th year singers, and include a celebration of Prof. Slon’s 25 years at UVA, with a special reception for Singers alumni and friends on Saturday, April 11. In addition, the group will release a new America250 recording created with Grammy–winning producer Blanton Alspaugh, and featuring works of Copland, Thompson, Frazier, and Hailstork. Tickets for the concert are available at the UVA Arts Box Office: https://artsboxoffice.virginia.edu/ | 434 924-3376, and in person at the door.

The University Singers is the University of Virginia’s flagship choral ensemble, heard by thousands each season in performances of a cappella and accompanied choral repertoire, including major works with orchestra. In 2017, the group joined the Charlottesville Symphony on the steps of the Rotunda to perform for UVA’s Bicentennial Launch Celebration, before an estimated crowd of 20,000. In recent years, the Singers have also sung for Les Misérables creators Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil during their UVA residencies, sung for the 2016 UVA Holiday greeting which received more than 400,000 views on social media, and given the regional premiere of Bernstein’s Mass as part of 2018 Bernstein centennial celebrations. During the pandemic, they presented virtual performances, and hosted online master classes with Eric Whitacre, Alice Parker, and other choral luminaries – and since have returned to live singing with performances of Johnson’s Considering Matthew Shepard, the Rachmaninoff Vespers with the Oratorio Society of Virginia, and the North American premiere of Ešenvalds’ St. Luke Passion with the composer in residence. The group regularly tours the U.S. and internationally, most recently taking a May 2025 tour to the Baltics, which a included performance with members of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and Latvian Opera Orchestra. The 2025–26 season began with performances with the Charlottesville Symphony of Dvořák’s Mass in D and the beloved Family Holiday Concerts. Stay tuned for more info on the 2026–2027 season.
