🫖🍵 THE HISTORY OF TEA LEAF READINGS 🫖🍵

The word tasseography comes from the French tasse, meaning “cup,” and the Greek suffix -graph, meaning “writing.” You may also hear it called tasseomancy or tasseology—all referring to the art of interpreting patterns left behind in a cup.

Tasseography blossomed in Europe during the 17th century, shortly after tea began arriving in England through expanding trade routes with China. Among the earliest Europeans to practice this form of divination were traveling Roma readers, who often offered their intuitive services door-to-door. In Victorian times, it became fashionable for society ladies to invite Roma women into their parlors for elegant tea-cup readings.

Those curious to learn the craft themselves often turned to one of the earliest English books on the subject: Tea-Cup Reading and Fortune-Telling by Tea Leaves (1881). Written under the mysterious pen name “A Highland Seer,” the book detailed traditional symbols, patterns found in the leaves, and even stories of spaewives, the Scottish women known for their skill in second sight and tea leaf interpretation.

Although tasseography waned in popularity in the early 20th century with the rise of convenient teabags, the renewed love for loose-leaf tea has helped revive this beautiful, intuitive tradition. Today, more and more people are rediscovering the magic found in the bottom of the cup.
