Break Your News: Crisis Communications for Public Safety Supervisors & PIOs, 25 September | Event in Isle of Palms About the event Break Your News: Crisis Communications for Public Safety Supervisors & PIOs
The crisis communications training leaders wish they had received sooner. Effective. Engaging. Relevant.

About this Event

No matter how well your communications plan is written, it will only be as effective as the training and preparation the leaders on your team have received.

This engaging, fast-paced, two-day course prepares public safety supervisors and PIOs for messaging when crisis strikes, whether it comes in the form of a critical incident outside the organization or controversy directed at it. This timely training from Julie Parker, an Emmy-award winning former journalist who also served as a PIO for two of the country's largest police departments and Nelly Miles, Director of Public and Government Affairs for a large state law enforcement agency, prepares you to contribute to the public messaging when communication matters most.

Topics include:

· Messaging in real time through social media (with case study)

· The art of the effective news release

· Managing misinformation online and in the media

· Navigating the complex world of media relations

· Winning the news conference from prep to post-conference

· Practical exercises that put the training into practice

· Mock news conference scenarios

Effective public communication has never been more complex or more important. Obtain time-tested tools to communicate through the inevitable critical incidents by two sought-after crisis communications instructors.

Training certificates are available upon request.

About The Host: Julie Parker has a unique media background having served as both a Washington, DC TV news reporter, a talk show host and as the media relations director for two large police departments, effectively reporting from both sides of the crime tape. She currently runs Julie Parker Communications, the consultancy she founded in 2014. Julie worked for both the Fairfax County (VA) and the Prince George’s County (MD) Police Departments, leading large media teams that operated like newsrooms. Under her leadership, the police media bureaus successfully increased transparency and improved public trust. In these roles, Julie drew heavily upon her experience at WJLA-TV, the ABC affiliate in Washington, DC. In her capacity as a journalist, she earned both Emmy and Edward R. Murrow awards. She was a general assignment reporter, covering such stories as the Beltway Sniper, the September 11th attacks and the Oscars, live from Hollywood. Julie has also served as the Senior Media Advisor for the International Association of Chiefs of Police. She is a regular guest lecturer at the FBI National Academy and a subject matter expert with the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, focusing on crisis communications, media relations best practices and the use of social media in both emergencies and for community engagement.
