The Charleston Gaillard Center proudly re-premieres its first self-produced theatrical work, Finding Freedom: The Journey of Robert Smalls, ahead of its nationwide tour. Reworked to appeal to a national audience and touring schedule, this powerful production brings to life the extraordinary true story of Robert Smalls—born enslaved in Beaufort, SC—who, through courage and ingenuity, changed the course of American history. In 1862, with his future and freedom on the line, Smalls seized the CSS Planter in Charleston’s harbor and delivered it to Union forces, securing freedom for himself, his family, and his crewmates. Infused with music, movement, and multimedia, Finding Freedom explores Smalls’s Gullah roots, his daring escape, and his legacy as a statesman and civil rights pioneer. Directed by JaMeeka D. Holloway and featuring music arranged by Charleston’s own Charlton Singleton, this inspiring production is a celebration of resilience, heritage, and heroism.
