Calling All Colors 2019: a Celebration of Multi-Culturalism

The congregation of Mother Emanuel AME Church and Palmetto Community Action Partnership (CAP)  and Mother Emanuel Empowerment Corporation invite the Charleston community to a free one-day camp for young people (ages 10 to 14)  on June 20th to celebrate multi-culturalism and diversity through collaborative art projects. This year we will also host 15 to 18-year-olds who are looking to get involved and make changes within their community in a seperate seminar. Youth will also gain tools to combat bullying and process tragedy.

This interactive event is being held in conjunction with the Emanuel Commemoration Committee’s official Light of Hope activities to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Emanuel 9 and the survivors.

Based on a curriculum developed at Coastal Carolina University, children will learn how to appreciate diversity and differences and how to promote multi-culturalism in their schools and communities.  The College of Charleston's Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion and various artists from the community will help facilitate activities.

Lunch will be provided.

During the afternoon, the children will be divided into collaborative clusters and will create a presentation based on one of the many  talent options  (art, dance, choir, poetry, drama, song-making, origami, martial arts and more).

Volunteers are needed from 8:00am-4:00pm to assist with registration, lunch and talent clusters.  Volunteers from the arts community are needed to assist with facilitating these sessions.  Please indicate interest in talent clusters and job duties by registering under the Volunteer ticket.

Adults are able to participate in morning and afternoon educational sessions led by the MUSC Empowerment Center.  Topics include how parents can help children cope with tragedy and how to properly respond to bullying.

Supervision is provided by pre-screened volunteers and Charleston Police Department.  Parents and group chaperones are welcome to tour the beautiful city of Charleston during the conference.

If you're interested in leading an art cluster related to diversity, please contact Savannah Murray at 843-724-6760 ext. 223 or c211cnJheSB8IHBhbG1ldHRvY2FwICEgb3Jn
