▶️"Plus ça change?" L'écologie du régime : résilience et adaptation dans les relations entre les partis politiques et la société civile organisée au niveau méso – le cas de Charleroi

▶️Nick Martin étudie les relations entre les partis politiques et les associations civiques. Il a terminé sa thèse de doctorat intitulée « Connected Agents of Representation » (Agents connectés de représentation) en 2024 à l'Université d'Amsterdam. En octobre 2024, il a commencé ses recherches postdoctorales au Cevipol, à l'ULB. Il mène des recherches approfondies sur les liens entre les partis politiques et les associations civiques en réalisant trois études de cas au niveau municipal et en explorant le concept d'écologies de connexion. La première étude de cas, menée entre octobre 2024 et juillet 2025, a eu lieu dans la ville de Charleroi. Nick a interrogé 39 représentants de partis et d'associations civiques, ainsi qu'un certain nombre de commentateurs et d'experts, et a recueilli une grande quantité de données sur les liens entre les politiciens et les associations civiques, ainsi que sur les liens entre les associations. Dans sa présentation, Nick exposera ses premières conclusions et invitera les participants à faire part de leurs commentaires et réactions. Sa deuxième étude de cas, à Brighton au Royaume-Uni, débutera en janvier 2026.

▶️Résumé:
Comment comprendre le schéma des liens entre les partis politiques et les associations citoyennes au niveau méso ? Dans cet article, je soutiens que de nouvelles perspectives sur cette question peuvent être développées en concevant ces liens de manière écologique. J'introduis un concept novateur, l'écologie des liens, et je cherche à cartographier cette écologie à partir d'une étude de cas portant sur la ville de Charleroi, en Wallonie. À l'aide d'une analyse des réseaux sociaux et d'une analyse thématique, je constate que l'écologie des liens à Charleroi s'articule principalement autour de relations informelles, souvent fondées sur des connaissances, qui reposent sur des valeurs communes de solidarité et un fort sentiment d'appartenance à la communauté. Je qualifie ce modèle de connexions d'« écologie du régime », qui sert à maintenir une coalition résiliente entre l'administration municipale, les partis et les associations de la ville. Cette coalition cherche à utiliser ses pouvoirs et ses ressources limitées pour répondre aux besoins des citoyen·ne·s face à des défis sociaux et économiques nombreux et croissants.

▶️‘Plus ça change?’ The Regime Ecology: resilience and adaptation in the connections between political parties and organised civil society at the meso level – the case of Charleroi

▶️Nick Martin studies the relationships between political parties and civic associations. He completed his doctoral dissertation – Connected Agents of Representation - in 2024 at the University of Amsterdam. In October 2024 he started his post-doctoral research at Cevipol, ULB. He is conducting in-depth research into the connections between political parties and civic associations by conducting three case studies at the level of the municipality and exploring the concept of ecologies of connection. The first case study, conducted between October 2024 and July 2025, was in the city of Charleroi. Nick interviewed 39 representatives of parties and civic associations, as well as a number of commentators and experts, and collected a large amount of data on the connections of politicians to civic associations, and also connections between associations. In his presentation Nick will present his initial findings and invite comments and feedback. His second case study, in Brighton in the UK, will start in January 2026.

▶️Abstract:
How can we understand the pattern of connections between political parties and civic associations at the meso level? In this paper I argue that new insights on this question can be developed by conceiving of these connections ecologically. I introduce a novel concept, the ecology of connections, and seek to map such an ecology with a case study of the city of Charleroi in the region of Wallonia. Using social network and thematic analysis I find that the ecology of connections in Charleroi is formed predominantly around informal and often acquaintance based relationships, that are underpinned by shared values of solidarity and a strong sense of community. I label this pattern of connections the Regime Ecology, one that functions to sustain a resilient coalition of municipal administration, parties and associations in the city. This coalition seeks to use its limited powers and resources to meet the needs of citizens in the face of numerous and growing social and economic challenges.
