What is a fern, anyway? In this talk, botanist Carl Rothfels will demystify (and maybe re-mystify) the fascinating world of ferns. He'll explore their unusual hidden biology, provide tips for fern identification, and introduce some of North Carolina's outstanding fern diversity.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Carl Rothfels was born and raised in southern Ontario and was a nature nerd from a young age. It wasn't until his PhD at Duke University, however, that he caught the fern flu. Now a full-fledged pteridologist, he is the Director of the Intermountain Herbarium in Logan, Utah, where he gets to indulge his interest in botanical diversity and particularly his fascination with the infamously confusing fragile ferns (Cystopteris).
