Handmade Books Workshop

Are you a young artist who wants to take things to the next level by constructing your own sketchbooks? A creative writer looking for a special way to display your latest manuscript? Interested in a way to make personalized gifts for years to come? Perhaps you find the construction of basic objects like books by hand to be of interest and want to try your hand?

In this workshop, we will look at examples of various types of hand bound books, and learn a basic brochure stitch for binding small booklets. Students may also try their hand at more complex stitches like the coptic stitch if their level of interest allows!

We will also look at some examples of hand illustration in older texts, including fanciful initial letters in the illumninated manuscripts of the past, and examples of calligraphy from various cultures and brainstorm how to incorporate those into the artform of handmade books!

$40 per participant, advance registration required.
