Saint George's festival in Asigonia, Chania
Saint George Galatas (Milkman) is the patron saint of shepherds and every year on his day, April 23rd, there is a spectacular ceremony in the mountainous village of Asi Gonia during which St. George is remembered, the shepherds are honoured, and their sheep are blessed after being milked.
The shepherds start from 4am in the morning, they gather their herds and bring them in front of Saint George's church in order to be blessed by the priest. Afterwards, the shepherds milk their animals and women with traditional cretan customes distribute the fresh milk to the crowds along with other local treats from Asigonia's producers.
The preparations for Saint George's festival start days before and all the villagers, with respect for the traditions and the customs, help in the procedure.
No one knows when did this festival start, its roots lost track in time, probably before the Turkish occupation! So do not miss the chance to experience a unique tradition and discover the real Crete!
You are all very welcome!
