- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 27 Aug, 2026 at 09:30 pm – Fri, 28 Aug, 2026 at 12:00 am (-05:00)
- **Event Description**: The William M. Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College will host a free telescope viewing of the total lunar eclipse on Thursday, August 27, weather permitting.

In Champaign, the Moon the partial eclipse begins around 9:30 p.m. and will last for over three hours. The Moon will be darkest just after 11 p.m. Visitors are welcome to attend from 9:30 until midnight.

A lunar eclipse happens when Earth goes between the Sun and the Moon. Normally, one would see a full moon, but Earth's shadow can cover the Moon entirely, making it much dimmer. Despite the Moon being in Earth’s shadow, the surface can still be seen.

At other phases, this can be caused by sunlight reflecting off Earth, i.e. "earthshine." Since a lunar eclipse only occurs during a full Moon, the event is only visible at night. The Moon would only receive sunlight refracted through Earth's atmosphere. Essentially, the darker part of the Moon is lit up by all of Earth’s sunrises and sunsets.

Planetarium staff and members of the Champaign-Urbana Astronomical Society will set up telescopes outside the planetarium so visitors can look at the Moon.

The circle drive outside the planetarium and the theatre will be blocked off to allow for pedestrian traffic. Visitors should park in the M1 parking lot.

Please note that the event will be canceled if clouds obscure the Moon.
