Scope and Sequence for Series 1 students

Course Philosophy

This course is designed to be calm, accessible, and engaging. Students are not graded on accuracy or artistic ability. Instead, they are guided to see math and art connections as a living part of their world—something to notice, question, and enjoy.

Course Overview

Math and Art Connection is a low-pressure, high-awareness course designed to help students notice how math and art connect in everyday life. Students spend just a few intentional minutes each day engaging with simple tools, observation, and creative exploration.

There is no single “right” outcome. The focus is on learning to see, notice patterns, and experiment with ideas. Math and art inspirations are discovered through lived experience—not confined to worksheets.

Each week introduces foundational math/art concept explored through:

*Found objects as tools
*Daily spontaneous noticing is encouraged.
*Creative process to match interest
*Math/Art becomes something students recognize around them, not something separate from daily life.

Weekly Structure

Each week follows a predictable, gentle rhythm:

1. Introduction (10 minutes per week)
Attend the weekly Zoom meeting introducing the weekly concept or watch the recorded video
Discuss key ideas and simple practice plans with your students

2. Daily Practice (2–5 minutes per day)
Short, flexible sessions at home
Look for spontaneous opportunities to apply the concept
Observation is as valuable as creating

3. Create Together (Adjusted to attention span and interest)
Choose materials, style, and parameters
Explore personal interests and approaches
Practice setting personal boundaries, such as creating and maintaining an art station
_________
Weekly Concepts

Week 1: Straightedge — Seeing Straight Lines

Concept: A straightedge is any object with a straight edge used to draw straight lines. Unlike a ruler, it has no measurement markings.

Week 2: Square Corners (Right Angles)

Concept: A square corner forms a right angle. Students explore how to find and create square corners using everyday objects.

Week 3: Perpendicular

Concept: Students describe, in their own words, what perpendicular means and where they see it in daily life.

Week 4: Angle Finder

Concept: When straight lines meet, they create an angle. Students identify and experiment with angles they observe.

Week 5: Acute, Obtuse, and Right Angles
Concepts:
Acute angles
Obtuse angles
Right angles

Week 6: Horizontal Lines & the Horizon
Concept: A horizontal line defines the horizon. Students explore balance, grounding, and visual alignment.
__________
Course Philosophy
This course values:
Curiosity over perfection
Observation over speed
Awareness over rules
A few minutes a day is enough. The goal is not mastery, but encouragement—learning to notice the math/art connection already present in everyday life.
