Join us for a specially curated experience to honor the legacy of Rosewood and remember the victims of the 1923 Rosewood Massacre and other acts of violence against Florida’s Black communities. Over two days, we bring sites of historical significance to the forefront in order to share their powerful stories and to mark the beginning of the upcoming Rosewood Commemorative Park—a place dedicated to remembrance, education, and unity for present and future generations to come.
Be a part of preserving Black history and advancing Rosewood’s enduring legacy.
Info: A bus tour will leave Miami to Black heritages sites in Ocoee and Newberry, Florida. Ocoee is where a Black man named July Perry tried to vote in 1920. The result was a White mob burned a section of the Black community leaving hundreds of victims who were burned to death. From there, the tour goes to Newberry where the largest lynching in Florida history occurred in 1916. The tour will end at the hotel for a debriefing. Between tour stops, a boxed lunch will be provided; breakfast and dinner is on your own. (See the agenda for Day 2.)
Info: After breakfast provided at the hotel, the tour will head to Rosewood - a once thriving Black community that was destroyed by a White mob due to a false allegation by a White woman that she was assaulted by a Black man. The group will tour the Dunn property, the site of the future Rosewood Commemorative Park, which will open at 10am. Guests will be able to walk down the Historic Seaboard Airline Railroad bed on the Dunn property to view images reflecting the racial history of Florida. Rosewood artifacts will also be on display along with the future design and plans for the Rosewood House of Peace. A brief dedication ceremony will be followed by a catered lunch. Bus departs to Miami at 3pm.
