A Lecture by Glenn Diaz

ABSTRACT
It is often casually accepted that fiction can testify to a “truth” about life and society. For instance, the novels of Jose Rizal, which every Filipino high school student must take up, are credited for giving contemporary readers a glimpse into an abusive colonial system. But what exactly is the tactic of fiction? How is fiction’s manner of communicating a political idea different from, say, a history book, or even movies and commercials? Palanca-winning novelist Glenn Diaz will look at how narratives are by nature political, especially in the context of a historical moment saturated by competing stories in mass and social media. Then with key examples he shall make the case for fiction’s unique capacity to engage and question the blinding frenzy that is our current social reality.
