A note from the artist, Juan Ashlish:

Ashlishyn Vannin (Visions of Mann) is the evolution of the journey I began with my book, An Illustrated Guide to the Folklore of the Isle of Man. When I created those original illustrations, I was often working on them from another country or racing against a deadline. This exhibition, however, was born from the luxury of time and the chance to live here.

By walking the glens, cliffs, and hidden corners of the Island, I was able to research these legends in the very places they are said to dwell. My goal was to move beyond the “static” icons of a book and show these figures as living parts of the Manx environment. In pieces like Enbar or the Selkie, you don’t just see a creature standing on a page; you see them inhabiting the Isle.

I also wanted to challenge traditional interpretations. For Manannan, I chose to step away from the common image of an old man with a long white beard. He was a protector who fought for this Island, a master of sword and magic. I wanted to portray him as a powerful warrior, radiating the strength required to guard our shores.

While the first four walls are dedicated to the legends of Mann, the fifth wall is a more personal look at my creative life here. These pieces represent my own imaginary explorations and the artistic paths I’ve followed while living on the Island, showing the work that exists beyond the Manx folklore.
