Join us at the Harry Kelly's Cottage for a behind the scenes look at the conservation repairs currently being undertaken. Led by SofA member and Historic Buildings Architect for Manx National Heritage John-Paul Walker, the tour will include details of the replacement thatched roof and the repairs that needed to be made before the thatching could begin.

The cottage is a registered ancient monument and one of only a handful of traditionally thatched dwellings on the Island. Believed to date back to the 1830s, the property is significant in relation to its association with Harry Kelly, a renowned Manx speaker. After his death in 1935, his family donated the cottage to the Manx Museum Trustees in 1938, establishing Cregneash as the first open air folk museum in the British Isles.

This important work is being carried out using traditional building techniques and, under the guidance of John-Paul and the MNH team, it represents an exemplar conservation project.

Once the tour is complete, we will gather at either the Albert in Port St Mary for a chance to informally discuss the project.

Please note: the tour will involve some walking around an open air work site, with uneven surface. Safety footwear or walking boots must be worn; we reserve the right to decline entry if suitable footwear is not worn. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Admission is by ticket only; half of the £5 ticket cost will be donated to the Friends of Manx National Heritage.
