Brutalist architecture occurred during the 1950’s to the1980’s and was characterised by raw unadorned materials like exposed concrete and the forms were usually massive, monolithic and geometric. He received 3 Royal Australian Institute of Architects awards for the house and the CBC building.Geoff Malone designed this house for his parents in the year 1973 and is like a modern day castleThe house appeared in Peter Weir’s Australian movie, The Cars that Ate Paris. It was very innovative for its time because of the use of curved face concrete block walls, off form concrete, curved glass, curved acrylic skylights and open planningIt is like a modern day castleI say this as it has 4 circular turrets at each corner of the house made from concrete block giving the house a symmetrical floor plan.Continuing the theme of a castle, the house originally was entered by a bridge to the middle level passing over a circular driveway but this has been altered by moving the carparking closer to the street.The structural elements of the house are quite neutral in colour, grey concrete block, white painted cement render and black framing for windows and doors.Originally to offset this neutrality, splashes of colour were incorporated in the original design ie. lime green upholstery for built in seating and blue carpet.Don't miss out on this At Home when you will see a spectacular architect designed residence, limited numbers, so book now.InstructionsIn consideration of others, please do not attend if you are feeling unwell. Event is not wheelchair accessible, children under 12 not permitted and no pets allowed. The residence will be opened for one hour.
