About the Location
Stonefield began as the agricultural estate of Nelson Dewey, the first Wisconsin governor. The Dewey estate became a designated historic site in 1954 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. By 1961, the 30 buildings that make up Stonefield were officially opened to the public, offering a historic and culturally enriching perspective of farm life in rural Wisconsin. Since opening, Stonefield curators have added countless farm implements, vintage machinery and exhibits to the estate—culminating in the grand opening of the Wisconsin State Agricultural Museum in 1971. Today, Stonefield serves as a monument to the rich agricultural heritage of rural Wisconsin, offering unique insights into the rise and evolution of crop production in the Badger State.
