The Gospel of Matthew

The Episcopal Church follows a lectionary—a set schedule of Scripture readings that guides our worship throughout the year. This lectionary runs on a three-year cycle, with each year highlighting one of the Gospels. Last Sunday we began Year A, the year of Matthew, after completing Year C, which centers on Luke.

While the Gospels often share similar stories, each writer speaks to a particular community with its own theological concerns and insights about who Jesus is. Matthew’s Gospel was written primarily for a Jewish-Christian audience, a community deeply rooted in the Hebrew Scriptures and eager to understand how Jesus fulfills God’s promises to Israel.
