How to Play (White Elephant)
Here’s the thing: everyone has a different way of playing this game. But I’ll lay out the way my family plays, and then include some variations below. That way you can choose whichever variation sounds best to you.
Buy a gift that’s under $20. It can be weird, funny, or really awesome. We get a mix of everything when we play. After all, it’s fun to fight over the best of the worst gifts.
Gather in a circle… or triangle, rhombus, octagon… really any geometrical shape you want. Presents go in the middle.
Have everyone draw a number from a bowl. Lowest number goes first.
Player #1 picks a gift from the pile. Unwrap it and show it to everyone. If it’s an awesome gift, chances are… you won’t have it for very long.
Player #2 either picks a new gift from the pile, or, if Player #1’s gift strikes their fancy, they can steal it.
If Player #2 does steal from Player #1, then Player #1 gets to draw a new gift from the pile. However, Player #1 cannot immediately steal the gift back. They have to wait until their next turn. Kind of like the no tagbacks rule, right?
Then Player #3 has a chance to steal either item or pick one from the pile. The game goes on like this until everyone has gone.
Then Player #1, the poor person who’s probably had their gift stolen from them several times, can steal any gift they want. So they’re actually kind of lucky…
