Background: After months of growing darkness, we will come together in community on this longest night of the year to celebrate the return of the light. We will fortify ourselves as we release limitations of the old year and ask for rejuvenation in making the shift into the new.
Cross into the time of increasing light feeling renewed and full of curiosity and courage. This ancient Nahua ceremony is highly participatory–a time for community to learn and grow together through shared experience. Receive inspiration and beneficial awareness from four helping deities uniquely aligned with Winter's purpose.
Let the Solstice Fire illuminate what no longer serves you and burn it away!
About the Ceremonial Leader: Sherry Boatright has made Carrollton her home since she came for graduate study at West Georgia College (now UWG) in 1978 and earned a master’s degree in psychology. She was later licensed and practiced as a psychotherapist for 30 years. In 1999 she answered a calling to an indigenous spiritual path and was initiated in the Nahua tradition of the highlands of central Mexico by elder Don Lucio Campos Elizade. This living tradition works to “call the rains” and mitigate damaging storms during the growing season. As part of this path, Sherry was also trained and initiated to offer Nahua traditional shamanic healing (tepahtiani). She travels twice a year to Mexico to participate in weather ceremonies in order to maintain a reciprocal relationship with the Weather Beings. In 2003, she founded a ceremonial group to engage a mountain in Georgia that can bring beneficial weather to a large area of the Southeast. This work continues yearly with a spring ceremony petitioning for abundant rains for the growing season and a fall harvest and gratitude festival. Both are open to anyone who would like to participate. (For more information on that project, click .)
