It'll be Valentines Day and time to get sensuous. So we've chosen to feature that most sensuous of ballroom dances, the Bolero. Bolero is a muscular and more dramatic cousin of the subtle and sublime Rumba. Although the music tempo is similar between the two dances, the typical song for a Rumba has delicate syncopations that drive the Latin motion of that dance. Whereas music for the Bolero is more robust and rhythmically powerful.

The technique that most distinguishes the muscular Bolero from the delicate Rumba is the "Drop and Drift" - dropping into your standing leg at the downbeat of each measure while shifting your weight forward, back or side onto your other leg. It's fun and it really develops your quads, glutes and core (Bolero makes for a great exercise routine).

We've invited Susie Buck of Take the Lead Ballroom in Raleigh, www.taketheleadballroom.com , to get our dance started with a lesson of basic Bolero. This will give you all you need to really enjoy the Bolero music we'll mix in with all the other ballroom dance music we'll play during the ensuing 2+ hours of general dancing.
