- **Event Description**: Nerd out on native plants while exploring how Oxbow’s nursery grows resilient, genetically diverse species from seed.About this EventYou’re invited to look beyond flowers and foliage and into the hidden world of biodiversity, adaptation, and resilience carried inside every seed. Oxbow Native Plant Nursery Technician and team-anointed “Seed Czar” Jessica Speer is as much of an expert in seed protocols as she is at demystifying concepts and making learning accessible and fun.Jess will guide you from a seed harvest walk into the behind-the-scenes workings of Oxbow’s Nursery, where you’ll observe how seeds move from harvest to propagation through hands-on demonstrations, close observation, and shared discussion. Along the way, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the role seed-grown plants play in supporting healthier, more resilient landscapes and gather inspiration for your own garden and stewardship work. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events9/banners/6ea3f700-9342-11f1-8f1c-cf8ce96ac258-rimg-w1200-h563-dcf8f8f8-gmir.jpg YOU'LL EXPERIENCE:Seed Harvesting: Learn how to identify ripeness, collect seed responsibly, and follow best practices that protect long-term plant populations and ecosystem health.Processing Techniques: Practice wet-processing, float-testing, winnowing, screening, and other seed-cleaning methods used within Oxbow’s Native Plant Nursery.Seed Dormancy: Explore ways seeds survive and germinate in the wild and see the techniques Oxbow uses to break dormancy, including scarification, stratification, and wildfire-inspired cues.Genetic Resilience: Discover why growing native plants from seed supports biodiversity, climate resilience, and healthier plant communities. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events3/banners/6ec1b830-9342-11f1-8f1c-cf8ce96ac258-rimg-w1200-h563-dcf8f8f8-gmir.jpg ABOUT YOUR FACILITATORJessica Speer (she/her) is an Oxbow Native Plant Nursery Technician with a deep love for seeds, propagation, and the fascinating processes that support healthy native plant communities. We use this mixed landscape to:Produce food.We cultivate 12 acres of certified organic mixed vegetable crops, herbs, and flowers using agro-ecological principles and engage in research to inform conservation agriculture practices. We grow food for local grocery stores, restaurants, hunger relief, a CSA program, and an on-site seasonal Farm Stand.Grow native plants. We operate a native plant nursery that uses sustainable growing methods to produce plants for habitat restoration projects and urban landscapes. We share our knowledge to encourage increased production and use of natives in the Pacific Northwest, and beyond.Connect children to nature. We offer education programs for children pre-K through high school to build environmental literacy and provide students with opportunities to learn about the links between agriculture, conservation, and the environment.Restore and sustain habitat. We carry out ecological restoration projects and partner with scientists, regional planners, and other environmental organizations to learn how humans can benefit from the land while protecting biodiversity.Cultivate community. We offer people of all ages opportunities to put their values into action as we promote climate resilience and encourage healthy food systems. We foster community through volunteer opportunities, Membership, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, workshops & tours, and special events."
