Do human rights continue to have a role? What is that role and how does it impact on law reform in Australia and, in particular, on the work of the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC)? Federal Court Judge and current President of the ALRC, Justice Mordy Bromberg, will reflect on those issues and on the challenges presented by international law, in discussing recent ALRC inquiries.Please join Melbourne Law School (MLS) and Melbourne University Law Review (MULR) from 5:30 pm with welcome drinks and light refreshments provided in the ground floor foyer of the MLS Building. The lecture will start at 6:00 pm sharp in the ground floor theatre G08.About the SpeakerJustice Mordecai Bromberg is the President of the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) and was appointed on 10 July 2023 for a term of five years. Justice Bromberg was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia in 2009 after a long career as a barrister at the Victorian Bar and a shorter career as a solicitor working in Melbourne, London and Hong Kong. He was also an occasional consultant to the International Labour Organisation. Justice Bromberg presided over many of the most important cases in the areas of law in which he practiced. His Honour led the Federal Court’s Employment and Industrial Relations National Practice Area, and his Honour’s wide-ranging practice and experience included Administrative Law, Native Title Law, Migration Law, Human Rights and Constitutional Law. Some 14 years and over 500 judgments after his Honour’s appointment to the Federal Court, he was appointed President of the Australian Law Reform Commission in July 2023 but continues as a part-time Judge of the Federal Court. Justice Bromberg is the Chair of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law, University of Melbourne, is a former President of the International Commission of Jurists (Victoria) and the former founding President of the Australian Institute of Employment Rights.
