'Aspects of Love' Part One: Geeta Govinda in Odissi tradition
Saturday 24th February 3.30pm
'Aspects of Love' Part Two: Padams and Javalis in Bharata Natyam tradition
Saturday 24th March 3.30pm
The first event, the Geeta Govinda lec/dem will focus on intensity of expression and Abhinaya. Chandrabhanu will guide the audience towards a better understanding of the 12th century work written by poet Jayadeva.
Jayadeva's dramatic lyrical poem Geeta Govinda is a unique work in Indian literature and a source of religious inspiration in both medieval and contemporary India. The poem is dedicated in devotion to the god Krishna. It concentrates on Krishna's love with the cowherdess Radha in a rite of spring. Intense earthly passion is the example Jayadeva uses to express the complexities of divine and human love.
Chandrabhanu is the first choreographer to have worked on all 24 songs of the Geeta Govinda.
The second lec/dem explores interpretations of love and devotion demonstrated through the Padams and Javalis of Bharata Natyam.
Several dance works will be presented by the Jambudvipa dancers in both the lec/dems.
$30 single admission
$50 Season pass for both lectures
