According to Troiano, the VFW and American Legion have similar missions - working to support veterans and charitable causes. They collaborate on many programs and events, such as the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests. They also collaborate to provide the honor guard at events like Carey football games and service member funerals. The main difference between the two organizations is that the VFW is for veterans of foreign wars, while the American Legion is open to all service members regardless of whether or not they were in a foreign engagement.

Both organizations have a local and a national component. Since the groups are non-profit, any profits they make go right back to helping veterans and serving their communities. The Carey Fire Department, Carey Link, and local youth groups are just a few of the many recipients of the local  chapters’ ongoing financial support. In addition to their charitable contributions, they provide a clubhouse as a gathering place for veterans and members to have camradery.  At the national level, the VFW and American Legion help promote new bills supporting veterans’ rights and services. 

According to Troiano, “A lot of people have a misconception we’re just a bar. We do a lot of activities, fundraisers, lunches, and other public events.” He looks forward to speaking at The Link and sharing more about the good work the VFW and American Legion do.
