Of Māori descent and educated at Auckland Grammar School, he first rose to prominence playing provincial rugby for Auckland during one of the team’s most dominant periods. He made his international debut for the New Zealand national rugby union team in 1987, the same year they won the inaugural Rugby World Cup. Renowned for his versatility and flair, Brooke famously scored a long-range drop goal against England in 1995—an unusual achievement for a forward. Over his international career, he earned 58 caps and scored 17 tries, helping redefine the role of the modern back-row forward through his unique combination of power and skill.
