More on the Show:
Tom Dreyer + The Buckfever Underground
For this show the acclaimed novelist and poet Tom Dreyer collaborates with spoken word group The Buckfever Underground. Tom will share the stage with drummer Stephen Timm and Righard Kapp during set one, after which regular Buckfever frontman Toast Coetzer will join the fray in set two.
After having been acquaintances for years, Tom and Toast grew closer in the past couple of years after performing at an underground festival in the Tankwa Karoo together, and also hitting the N1 north (Prince Albert, Bloem, Parys, Pretoria) for a few shows during the summer of 2024.
Their shared love for the road and its landscapes saw them do another trip in the summer of 2025 – this time through Botswana and parts of Namibia.
About Tom Dreyer:
Born in 1972, Tom Dreyer studied at the University of Stellenbosch and works as a computer programmer. He has published several acclaimed Afrikaans novels (Erdvarkfontein, Stinkafrikaners, Equatoria, Dorado), and one in English (The Long Wave). Besides two successful short story collections, he published his first poetry collection in 2023, Nou in infrarooi, with another on its way in 2026. His writing is smart, funny, idiosyncratic, packed with detail and always lyrical and innovative.

About The Buckfever Underground:
The Buckfever Underground was formed in Grahamstown in 1998 but have been based in Cape Town since the early 2000s. Variously playing as anything from a five-piece to a duo, they have performed at festivals like Oppikoppi and Aardklop and released (about) 11 albums over the years. Probably best described as a “bilingual spoken word act driven by experimental, improvisational music” they have forged a singular path in the local scene – every show offers something new and unexpected.
Recent releases include Voortvlugtend (2022), Satelliet (2020) and Last Days of Beautiful (2019). More about the band on Instagram (@thebuckfeverunderground) or buy and download their albums from www.buckfeverunderground.bandcamp.com (music also available on streaming platforms).
