Wendy Oldfield and Robin Auld are two of South Africa’s most enduring and influential singer-songwriters. Emerging from the vibrant 1980s alternative rock and pop scenes, both artists have spent over four decades shaping the country's musical landscape. Today, they are celebrated as cultural icons, blending contemporary rock, world music, blues, and African rhythms into a distinctly South African sound.

Both Wendy Oldfield and Robin Auld embody the resilience and evolution of independent South African music. They represent a generation of artists who successfully bridged the gap between the politically charged music scenes of the 1980s and the diverse, globalized industry of the post-apartheid era.

Today, they frequently share the stage for collaborative acoustic tours. Their enduring relevance, extensive discographies, and multiple industry awards firmly solidify their standing as true legends of South African music history

Wendy Oldfield is a prominent, multi-award-winning South African singer, songwriter, and producer who has been a major force in the local music industry for over four decades. Born on 24 February 1964 in Cape Town, she first achieved nationwide fame in the mid-1980s as the energetic lead vocalist of the rock band The Sweatband before establishing a highly successful, genre-fluid solo career.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Birth & Roots: Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, growing up as the middle child of five siblings.

Education: Completed her schooling between Johannesburg and Cape Town, later studying at Barkly House Teachers Training College.

The Sweatband: Formed the iconic pop-rock outfit in 1983 at the age of 19. The band dominated South African radio with major hits like "This Boy" (which peaked at number 15 on the national charts in 1986) and "Shape of Her Body".

Solo Career & Musical Evolution

Oldfield took a bold leap to leave The Sweatband in 1988 to pursue a solo path. Her solo work gracefully evolved from indie rock and pop to world music, acoustic textures, and children's projects.

Debut Success: Released her debut solo album, Beautiful World, in 1992. The album yielded massive radio hits such as "Acid Rain", "Miracle", and "Real World".

World Music & Collaborations: In the late 1990s, she joined the world music group Mondetta alongside legendary musicians like Steve Newman and Gito Baloi. She has frequently collaborated with other SA greats, including Robin Auld, Johnny Clegg, and Hugh Masekela.

Children's Music: Shifting focus toward educational and cultural material, she produced the highly acclaimed Singalong Kidz series and Under African Skies, collecting multiple awards for her contributions to children's media.

Film Scores and Commercial Work

Beyond the stage, Oldfield is an accomplished commercial composer.

She composed the memorable soundtracks for iconic South African feature films by Leon Schuster, including Sweet 'n Short (1991) and There's a Zulu on My Stoep (1993).

Her hit song "Acid Rain" served as the global theme music for the 180-part wildlife television series Nature on Track.

She has contributed music to international projects, including wildlife documentaries for the Discovery Channel.

Notable Awards and Recognition

Throughout her career, Oldfield has garnered numerous accolades, including seven South African Music Award (SAMA) nominations:

1999 FNB SAMA Award: Pop Album of the Year (for On a Pale Blue Dot).

2009 & 2011 SAMA Awards: Best English Children's Album (for the Singalong Kidz series).

Personal Life

In 2003, Oldfield stepped away from the frenetic city life and moved to the coastal town of Wilderness along the Garden Route.
