Hector Lavoe is widely considered to be one of the most important contributors to the success of the Salsa genre. As a talented singer, he was able to bring his influences onto the New York music scene. Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he moved to New York City and went on to record 14 albums with Willie Colon and became a member of the Fania All Stars before launching a solo career. He made the list of one of the 200 greatest singers of all time according to Rolling Stone magazine. There are two Hector LaVoe statues erected in his honor: one in Puerto Rico and one in Peru.
Musician and bandleader Joe Hernandez has made his mark in SW Florida with his incredible Salsa band, Orquesta Classica, whose music is based on old-school Salsa Dura. He has previously worked with nationally renowned artists such as Richie Ray, Eddie “Gua Gua” Rivera and Ernie Agosto among others. They are often sought after for festivals, dances, and night clubs. With a repertoire that includes over 300 salsa arrangements, they will proudly pay tribute to Hector LaVoe. You will definitely enjoy this throwback to the heyday of Salsa, with Joe Hernandez and Orquesta Classica as their motto is “Old school salsa with a Touch of Class”.
Your emcee and DJ for the evening will be Nancy Alonso. She is known as “The First Lady of Salsa”, an on-air celebrity for over 18 years and also co-founder and Program Director of Salsa Empire Radio, an internet salsa radio station.
