This is the reason why Haiti's African heritage is deeply embedded in its culture, language, music, religion, and cuisine.The African influence in Haiti is not merely historical. It still continues to shape the identity of Haiti and Haitians, as evident in various aspects of Haitian daily life.Haiti's cultural heritage stems from the transatlantic slave trade and the subsequent Haitian Revolution. Enslaved Africans were brought to the island to work on plantations, and their descendants constitute the vast majority of the Haitian population today. This African heritage is evident in Haitian art, music, religion and language, all of which have been shaped by African traditions and influences.Afro-Haitians make up the largest population in Haiti. The Haitian Revolution of 1791-1804 which was victoriously fought by enslaved black people in Haiti, who defeated the French to establish Haiti as the first independent black nation in the Americas. This historic event served as an inspiration and motivation to the rest of the African Diaspora to attain their freedom and equality. Cap-Haitien is the second largest city in Haiti, after Port-Au Prince the capital of Haiti. Cap-Haitien is known for its historical sites, beaches, and vibrant culture. We will be there during the “Fet Okap” festival which celebrates the city’s anniversary. The Okap festivities include music, dancing and food festivals. Haiti is well known for having some of the best cuisine in the Caribbean. The festival attracts both the locals and members of the Haitian diaspora.
