A note from Roger Larson:
Hello Friends at Lakeland Community,
My name is Roger Larson, and I am a Therapist and Community Outreach Educator with North Central Behavioral Health Systems here in Canton. I am looking forward to being with you on Saturday, October 18, when we will be discussing the theme: “Dispelling the Myths: A Workshop on Substance Abuse.”
Perhaps the question comes to mind, “Why spend a Saturday discussing the “myths” of substance abuse? To answer that question, let me provide two statistics. In the publication “Addiction Group” it was reported that in 2024 “Over 50 million Americans were reported as having been diagnosed with a substance use disorder.” As alarming as that number may be there is one which is more disconcerting, “Over 70% of individuals with alcohol use or dependence never receive treatment.” That’s 35,000, 000 individuals with a substance abuse problem who are struggling.
Why have people not sought assistance with their abuse? In the survey you Folks took, you identified a primary reason, and that being “Stigma.” Yes, 59% of you when asked the question “What barriers do you think prevent individuals from seeking help for substance abuse in our community?” responded “Stigma.”
How does “stigma” develop? Many times, it’s due to the “Myths” which people have. Myths may be considered as those commonly held beliefs which drive people’s behavior. For our discussion, those “commonly held beliefs” do drive behavior, resulting in 35,000,000 individuals not seeking treatment.
So, back to my original question, “Why come on October 18?” We will be discussing those commonly held beliefs, or the “myths” concerning substance abuse. Our time will be informative, research-based, but peppered with good food and humor.
What do you say? Please, plan to attend Saturday, October 18.
