- **Event Name**: AUDITIONS: As You Like It
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 03 Sep, 2026 at 06:00 pm (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: emBODY Project Theatre is now accepting auditions for As You Like It: Body, Belonging, and Liberation — a physical theatre reimagining of Shakespeare's As You Like It centered on queer and cultural identity, code-switching, and drag culture within a patriarchal world.

This is not a standard staging. The production uses physical theatre as its primary language, generating distinct movement vocabularies for the court and forest worlds through the emBODY Performance Method. Stage combat is integrated throughout rehearsal in collaboration with Sarah Flanagan. The text is significantly cut and serves as a score for physical action rather than a script for delivery.

The court is any world that requires the body to perform compliance — culturally, queerly, socially — simultaneously. The forest is where that stops.

What to Prepare

A monologue — one to two minutes. Shakespeare or contemporary, your choice.

If you have musical ability and are interested in roles requiring musicality, bring a song or be prepared to play an instrument. Sheet music not required. Backing track or a cappella for vocalists. This is optional and dependent on casting interests — not required for all roles.

Everyone stays for the movement call. This is a facilitated physical theatre portion led at the audition. Nothing to prepare — just bring a body ready to work.

Available Roles

Rosalind (Musicality Required)
The production's central physical argument. Rosalind's transformation into Ganymede is not a costume change — it is a complete shift in body culture, a simultaneous code-switch and drag performance that is genuine liberation rather than strategic disguise. This role requires strong physical theatre presence, deep comfort with gender fluidity and transformation, and musicality. The body that plays Rosalind carries the whole research question.

Orlando (Musicality Required)
The wrestling match belongs to Orlando — the moment the court's body culture is most nakedly on display. His arc moves from performing patriarchal expectation in the court to discovering something different in the forest. Requires stage combat, strong physical presence, genuine transformation arc, and musicality. Orlando writes and sings in the forest.

Celia (Musicality Required)
Rosalind's co-conspirator and mirror. Goes through the same court-to-forest journey but holds her own distinct story within it. Strong ensemble collaborator, physically present, capable of holding her arc without losing herself in Rosalind's. Carries the forest's vocal and musical world alongside Rosalind.

Jaques
The forest's philosopher and critic. A body that chose the forest but carries the court's analytical habits. "All the world's a stage" is this production's most explicitly theatrical moment. Strong text, strong physical presence, comfort with stillness and observation as performance.

Touchstone (Musicality Required)
The jester who crosses into the forest and stays entirely himself. Comic, physical, a body that performs performance itself. Songs and wordplay are central to this role. Requires strong comic physicality and musicality.

Duke Frederick / Duke Senior (Open to doubling)
The court's authority and the forest's hospitality — two versions of power in two different body cultures. Duke Frederick holds the body culture of institutional control. Duke Senior holds the body culture of chosen exile. Strong physical presence required for both.

Oliver (Stage Combat)
Orlando's adversarial brother and the court's cruelty made human. Transforms in the forest. Requires stage combat and strong antagonist presence.

Phebe
A body with the power to refuse. Her desire for Ganymede is a queer body culture moment at the center of the forest world. Strong physical presence, comfort with desire and its performance.

Ensemble (Musicality Required)
The forest world is built by the ensemble. Multiple roles including Silvius, Corin, Audrey, Amiens, Le Beau, lords and court members. Physical theatre ensemble artists who hold both worlds, build the forest with their bodies, and carry the production's musical world together.

All genders, body types, identities, and experience levels are welcome. Comfort with physical work, collaborative devising, and consent-forward ensemble practice matters more than prior classical training.
