The Devising Lab is emBODY Project Theatre's ongoing practice-as-research ensemble program. Each cycle, a small group of artists works inside a defined research question, investigating it through physical practice, building devised performance through embodied scores and collaborative creation, and documenting the process as practice-as-research. This is not a class, a workshop, or a production internship. Lab artists are collaborators and co-researchers. The Devising Lab is a structured, facilitated research experience led by Corinne M. Mason in every session. Artists work inside the emBODY Performance Method from the first Wednesday through the final showcase. This season's Devising Lab is working on Once Upon a Lab: Origins (fall) and Once Upon a Lab: Echoes (spring), investigating the relationship between archetypal narrative and body culture in performance through children's stories, fables, and myths. HOW THE LAB WORKS Every Wednesday, the Devising Lab meets for four hours in two back-to-back parts. 6:00–7:15PM: emBODY Method Class Lab artists attend the emBODY Method class at no cost. This is a $25 drop-in value included in your lab participation every session. The class develops the physical theatre technique, body awareness, and ensemble practice that feeds directly into the devising work that follows. It is not optional. The class and the devising are one continuous practice. 7:15–10:00PM: Structured Devising Facilitated by Corinne M. Mason every session. The devising process is structured and research-driven, not free-form improvisation. The ensemble works inside specific prompts, scores, and investigations tied to the cycle's research question, building material that is documented, refined, and developed into the final devised performance. THIS SEASON Once Upon a Lab: Origins — Fall 2026 Where did it get installed? Origins investigates how culturally encoded stories, children's stories, fables, myths, install body culture and movement identity before performers have language for it. The wolf. The witch. The trickster. The one who gets saved. These characters live in the body from childhood. Origins goes looking for them. Once Upon a Lab: Echoes — Spring 2027 What is the body still doing with it? Echoes investigates how early narrative encoding persists in the performing body and develops tools for navigating it toward authentic embodiment. Echoes is a complete, standalone cycle. No prior participation in Origins required. Artists may apply for Origins, Echoes, or both. Artists who participate in both will have the opportunity to build on their research across the full year. WHAT YOU GET emBODY Method class at no cost every Wednesday, a $25 drop-in value included in every session. Structured devising facilitation by Corinne M. Mason in every session. PaR documentation infrastructure: movement journals, structured reflection, and optional video documentation with consent. Three public showcase performances per cycle. There is no financial compensation for lab artists at this time. WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR The Devising Lab is open to performers in the Greater Boston area who are interested in physical theatre and devising and who can make a consistent weekly commitment. All genders, body types, identities, and experience levels are welcome. You do not need a formal background in dance or theatre. You do need to be genuinely curious about embodied physical practice and ready to work inside a structured research process. We are looking for artists who are interested in physical theatre and devising practice, available every Wednesday for the full cycle, comfortable with process-visible research-based work where the outcome is not predetermined, ready to work consent-forward and hold the ensemble with care, and based in Greater Boston and able to attend in person. LAB COMMITMENT The Devising Lab meets every Wednesday for the full cycle. The ensemble builds trust, shared physical language, and a research body over time. Consistent attendance is essential to that process. Missing sessions undermines the work for everyone in the room. 4 hours every Wednesday, 6:00PM to 10:00PM. Full cycle attendance expected. Exceptions must be communicated in advance. Participation in all three public showcases for your cycle.
