‘[T]he true path toward the reduction of alienation would not be situated within the domain of the social (with the community of work and class), nor in the domain of the inter-individual relationships that social psychology habitually envisages, but at the level of the transindividual collective.’ (Simondon, 2017: 254)

Anglophone work on Gilbert Simondon’s Du mode d’existence des objets techniques [1958] (On the Mode of Existence of Technical Objects) has, until now, repeatedly lamented the lack of a thorough and complete translation of this rich and dense text. With this long-awaited English translation now published, those interested in his dynamic, comprehensive, and unique philosophical approach have a new entry-point. Cutting across ontology, philosophy of technology, cultural studies, psychology, and political economy, to name only some examples, Simondon’s rich and inventive work remains pertinent and challenging sixty years after its original publication in French.

Culture & Technics: The Politics of Simondon’s Du Mode will be a two and a half day conference at the University of Kent, Canterbury, from September 13th-15th. Broadly, the theme of the conference will be on the relationship that Simondon discusses between culture and technics, and the political and pedagogical challenges he poses in terms of a possible reconciliation between culture and technics in our political and pedagogical institutions and practices. Importantly, these discussions will be attuned to our present moment: digital technics having gone through an unforeseen process of concretisation and development, rapidly leading to the intensifying cyberneticisation of everyday life. As such, many of the themes and discussions will both be focused on exegetical and interpretive work on Simondon’s text, but placing these within our own present context, as well as the future prospects of automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and so forth.

More specifically, we are delighted that we will be welcoming Bernard Stiegler, Cecile Malaspina, Simon Mills, and Yuk Hui for two roundtables and four keynote sessions exploring these themes. As well as the aforementioned theme of the technics-culture relation, we will have panels on technics and politics, technics and practice, and digital objects, and are also excited to confirm contributions from, to name some examples, Anne Sauvagnargues, Mercedez Bunz, Daniela Voss, and Ashley Woodward.
