Come explore the Bow River Flats and learn both the ancient and modern stories of local mountains, where you have wide open panoramic views of some of the most photographed mountains in the Canadian Rockies.
These mountains get their distinctive shapes from the Rundle Thrust Fault effect, which gives this 50 km range between Canmore to Banff (from Mount Lougheed to Cascade Mountain) many of the most iconic mountains in the entire Rocky Mountains chain.
In addition to the unique geological forces that shaped these majestic peaks, these mountains really come to life when you hear the ancient indigenous stories of how they are seen as living beings and sacred guardians.
On this mindful sunset hike, you’ll learn the modern stories of how the mountains formed as well as the ancient stories of their creation from local indigenous legends.
On this hike, you can fully unplug, awaken your senses and learn mindful walking meditation. You will have a chance to pause and contemplate with a mindful walking session and sitspot meditation during the sunset to reflect on these stories and how these mountains inspire you with awe and wonder.
Along the way, you’ll also learn about the interconnected ecology of flora, fauna and fungi in the Canadian Rockies through exploring the biodiversity-rich montane and riparian ecosystem along the Bow River.
In this area, we regularly see beavers, bald eagles, coyotes, elk, deer and a rich diversity of birds singing in the trees.
We will start at the Canmore Off-Leash Dog Park on lower Cougar Creek and walk along the Bow River Flats exploring some of the best scenic viewpoints of the surrounding mountain landscapes.
Bring your camera and prepare yourself for a completely different way of seeing the most iconic mountains of the Bow Valley.
Enjoy the bonus of marvelling in awe at the incredible beauty of these sacred mountains during the golden hour as the sunset lights up the mountains.
Meeting Spot: Canmore Off-Leash Dog Park (first exit coming from Calgary by the helicopter pad)
This hike is a free community event happening on Friday, September 19th at 6:30 PM
