ABOUT THE FILM:

Travelling showman Maurice Pym (John Meillon) travels with his rebellious son Larry (Harold Hopkins) and pianist Freddie (John Ewart) through rural 1920s Australia. They make it their mission to ensure that remote audiences experience the glamour, escapism and wonder of cinema that their city cousins take for granted.

Based on the memoirs of Lyle Penn, whose own father was a travelling film exhibitor, The Picture Show Man captures the romance and hardship of early film exhibition, celebrating cinema as a shared social experience.

The film shone at the 1977 Australian Film Institute Awards winning Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Music Score.
