Competitive swimming becomes an outlet for Lidia (Imogen Poots), but it is through writing that she ultimately finds her survivor’s voice and confronts all that has happened to her.  

Lidia Yuknavitch wrote The Chronology of Water to purge a difficult childhood shaped by her controlling, abusive father and numbed out mother. What followed was addiction, grief and self-annihilation.   

Shot on 16mm to create the feeling you are looking directly at memory, writer/director Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame, rejects conventional biographical storytelling in favour of a fragmented, visceral approach mirroring the way in which trauma is remembered as feelings, not memories simply recounted. Led by a fearless multi-award-winning performance from Imogen Poots, Stewart’s film adaptation is a powerful exploration of resilience, creativity and the possibility of transformation against the odds.
