Come learn something new, meet some lovely people, and make something to cherish. Each workshop series runs over 3 weeks, giving you time to settle in, build your skills, and develop your work week by week. All materials are provided, and our experienced facilitators are friendly, supportive, and excited to share their practice with you. These workshops are designed to be welcoming, relaxed, and low-pressure — perfect for absolute beginners as well as people looking to connect with their creativity or try something different this winter. Our space is alcohol-free, open to people aged 16+, and focused on creating a comfortable and inclusive environment where you can experiment, make mistakes, and enjoy the process. PLUS! participants will have the opportunity to share their work at our Open Day on Saturday 1 August if they’d like to. MATERIAL RESONANCE The textiles in our lives tell stories. They’re entwined in our everyday lives, and hold traces of our daily experiences, memories, hopes, and existence in the world. Over three weeks, you’ll be introduced to a range of textile techniques including embroidery, quilting, and soft sculpture to draw out and work with the stories and meaning of your chosen materials. You can use this material resonance to create artworks infused with personal meaning and value -working with materials that have personal meaning to you and leaning into the histories of recycled textiles to build and develop your unique creative process and expression. The processes you'll explore are all slow and done by hand. They require minimal tools and are easy to practice at home or out in the world, so you’ll leave with a range of skills that you can continue to develop and play with long after the workshops are over and the confidence to create your own mindful creative practice. We’ll focus on creating an environment that helps you tune in to your own inner creativity in a way that is gentle and offers a contemplative space away from the busyness of everyday life. During the workshops, you’ll be provided with prompts and opportunities to explore each technique. You’ll then be supported to develop and use what resonates for you to create your own artwork by the end of the program. Using the materials themselves to scaffold your creative process and build your own creative language, you can turn this into anything your heart desires – 2D or 3D, large or small, working with one technique or combining them in a way that works for you. Michele Grimston is an artist and community cultural development practitioner based on Ngunnawal Country in Canberra. She is currently undertaking a practice-led PhD through the Faculty of Art and Design at University of Canberra. Her work explores slow, meditative textile processes as ways of practicing care and connection for earth, community and spirit. She is interested in building individual and collective rituals of creation which develop the role of these laborious textile processes in our personal, spiritual and social wellbeing. Michele completed her honours degree in textiles at the Australian National University School of Art in 2009 and in 2014, she graduated with a Masters in Community Cultural Development from the Victorian College of the Arts. She has exhibited in Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Canada and her work is held in the collection of Geoscience Australia. Michele has presented participative, community engaged works through Rebus and You Are Here and has facilitated large scale collaborative projects as an artist in residence in multiple schools and Early Learning Centres. In addition, Michele has over 10 years of experience managing community arts and education programs for public galleries including Belco Arts and Bunbury Regional Art Gallery. Through this work she supports artists and the public to build vibrant, connected and creative communities. This is series of workshops where participants will progressively create their textile artworks over three weeks. Workshop 1 - Wednesday 15 July Workshop 2 - Wednesday 22 July Workshop 3 - Wednesday 29 July All workshops run from 6:30pm-8:30pm. The YAH Studios & Workshop will be open from 6:00pm if you'd like to arrive early to settle in. Tickets There are three ticketing tiers available. The total price includes all 3 workshops.
