Travel through time and space to the vibrant community and boom-and-bust rhythms of Tasmania's west coast, in this mesmerising theatre show. Jacqui brings together spoken word, visuals and music for a truly transporting experience.
In 1924, near Queenstown on the west coast of Lutruwita/Tasmania, a young man holds a double-barrelled gun with a black cockatoo perched on the barrel. A young woman with short curly hair stands beside him in the button grass, a dead black cockatoo dangling from each hand. Who is this woman, and what is she doing? Come and find out!

GERT tells two inseparable stories: one of a place, and the other of one woman who lived there. It speaks to anyone interested in history, women’s lives, industrial history or the environment - and anyone who loves Tasmania!

“Gert is layered and beguiling in all the right ways. Just when you think you know where you are, Malins shifts, like the ancient river at the heart of the story, injecting surprise and delight, and interlacing local history with ecology and art.

“I’ve not seen anything like Gert before and I doubt I will again. This is a rare gem of a stage show brought to life by Malins’ powerful performance." - Johanna Bell.

'GERT' was nominated for the Artistic Merit award at the 2026 Newcastle Fringe Festival.
