Mikelangelo and Anushka come together for an unmissable performance as part of Smith’s Cabaret Cabal.

Growing up in Canberra, siblings Anna and Michael Simic first performed together as school kids, sharing a mutual love of the poetic and the absurd. While they have gone on to have their own very different creative journeys, the deep bond remains and they love to perform together whenever they can.

Based in Melbourne, Anna works with accordionist/pianist Dave Evans in their folk noir duo Anushka in the Woods. Their live show is spellbinding, with original songs that draw on darkly beautiful elements of magic realism, fairytale and folklore. Anna, as Anushka, is compelling. A born performer, she draws you in with each subtle movement, the tenderness and intensity in her voice shifting between delight, melancholy and hilarity. Evans is her perfect foil, a seasoned and thoughtful musician, he creates the musical world in which the characters of Anushka’s stories can frolic and play.

Following Anushka in the Woods, Mikelangelo will tread the boards in solo-mode, performing beloved songs from his repertoire with the Black Sea Gentlemen, alongside songs from his many and varied musical projects. This show will be a treat for Mikelangelo fans, full of singalongs and unexpected surprises. For any unfamiliar with his work, Mikelangelo is part ringmaster, part clown, a timeless troubadour who pulls songs out of the earth and the air that speak of all the beauty, sadness and vitality of the world. Completely at home on stage, a Mikelangelo performance is always a pleasure.

To close the show, Mikelangelo, Anushka and Dave Evans will come together for a handful of songs to send you off into the night with your hearts and minds full of possibility, wonder and joy.
