Lily will be joined in dialogue by the Deputy Director of the Power Institute, Professor Daniel Browning (Bundjalung/Kullilli).About the LectureEvoking Country: towards a land-based performing arts praxisA critical discourse on the idea of land-based works of performing art by the First Peoples, the 2026 Rex Cramphorn Memorial Lecture is delivered blackfella way – with two interlocutors in a vibrant and reflexive conversation about the centrality of place and belonging in the personal and professional praxis of one of Australia’s great storytellers, Murrawarri theatre maker Lily Shearer.In this dialogue with Professor Daniel Browning, the artistic director of Moogahlin Performing Arts Inc. presents the company’s work since its inception nearly two decades ago as an object lesson in land-based performance and describes the process by which the company embeds Country in the commissioning, writing and staging of its First Peoples-led productions. Currently Lily is the Artistic Director of Moogahlin Performing Arts, and is also a freelance-performing artist, a land based storyteller and works as a cultural collaborator/consultant/educator.In co-founding Moogahlin Performing Arts, a First Peoples company in Redfern, Sydney NSW, Lily’s vision was to put into practice the principle of ownership for First Peoples Australian communities by facilitating the handover of the final Gathering Ground project from Pact Youth Theatre to Moogahlin Performing Arts in 2010. A process outlined in Protocols of Engagement: Community Cultural Development Encounters an Urban Aboriginal Experience (2009). The former Editor Indigenous Radio at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Daniel also hosted RN’s The Art Show from 2021 until 2025, after 16 years curating the flagship Indigenous arts and culture program Awaye!, where he produced award-winning radio features and documentaries and established the shortform language revitalisation podcast Word Up. His first book, Close to the Subject: Selected Works, which catalogues his freelance writing on the arts, as well as poetry, memoir and his first play, won the 2024 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction and the Victorian Premier’s Indigenous Writing Prize the same year. In 2025 he won the Walkley Foundation’s inaugural Arts Journalism and Arts Criticism Prize with former ABC colleagues Rudi Bremer and Teresa Tan.
