Join us for the public opening celebration of What Does a Garden Know?, a new solo exhibition by Northumberland-based multidisciplinary artist and animator bekky O’Neil.
Developed from her MFA thesis at OCAD University, Bekky’s work explores the creation of a sustainable permaculture farm through the unique lens of animated documentary. Her films and writing consider the complex relationships between plants, animals, microbes—and us—asking whether consciousness and connection can be captured, shared, or even simulated.
Using a mix of stop motion, rotoscoping, hand-drawn 2D animation, and under-camera puppet work—often made with materials gathered from the land itself—Bekky’s frame-by-frame storytelling transforms documentary into something personal, layered, and alive. Inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, this work offers a gentle but radical shift in how we think about the stories we tell—and the ones our environments might be telling us.
Exhibition Dates: What Does a Garden Know?
runs from July 26 to September 6, 2025
Open Saturdays & Sundays, 10 AM – 4 PM
