In *Broadening Horizons* 🎓📜 we'll talk to actual young people (instead of about them), to find out what they say they need to succeed. We'll ask how we get the brightest students from our region's less advantaged areas into jobs commensurate with their talents. Then! We'll put their views to a panel of 'grown-up' experts before asking the young people what they made of the answers!
In *Beyond the Break*, 🧠🤕we'll look at career breaks, both those we choose and those - much like my own - that choose us, ready or not. If you're ready to change direction, how do you take those first steps? How do we deal with the doubt, imposter syndrome and risk of a momentous change? If not, how do we rebuild confidence and return to the workforce *safely*, meaning how do we ensure that those skills and institutional memory aren't lost for good in the rush to get someone back to work before they're ready?
Finally, in *Policy Skills Matter*, 🤔💡I'll be talking to experts in local, regional and national policymaking to ask for their thoughts on the first two panels, how we can make as many decisions as possible at the levels where they will be most effective, and balance the need to offer good jobs to local people with enticing the best and the brightest to the #eastofengland.
Does that sound like a fun, fascinating and thought-provoking morning? Thought so!
With PLENTY of scope for questions and contributions from the floor, followed by a delicious networking lunch, how can you say no?!
Eastern Promise is a non-profit community interest company and so there will be a very modest charge for tickets to the event.
Info: We talk directly to a panel of talented young people from some of the East of England's less advantaged areas to ask: What are their ambitions? Where do they find the information they need to determine their future, and what do they consider to be within their grasp? Crucially, we also explore what they think they need from preceding generations, including family, teachers, advisers and role models.
Info: Our second panel will take on board the aspirations, hopes, fears and concerns expressed as part of our first panel, reflect on what they've heard and tell us what's being done already. We'll also probe the (potentially false) conundrum of 'best job' vs 'nearest job', and work out where the locus of what young people say they want, what we agree they need, and what we can provide for them under current resource levels, actually lie.
Info: In this Q&A, we put the comments, suggestions and view of the 'grown-ups' on Panel 2 to the young people on our first panel, and in the audience more broadly! Do they think enough is being done to secure them the opportunities for a better, brighter, healthier and more prosperous future? Do they think employers and local authorities are going too far or not far enough?
Info: Tea, Coffee, maybe biscuits. We'll see.
Info: Our panel discusses looks at career breaks, both those we choose and those that choose us, ready or not. We'll ask a 30yr career scientist how she made a momentous switch by choice, whilst also exploring with experts in recruitment and the third sector how we can secure the safe return of those who experience an involuntary career shift back into the workforce safely, where their skills can be put to good, healthy use that makes sure experienced and skilled individuals - and their institutional memory - aren't lost.
Info: Finally, we'll ask policy experts, ecosystem gurus and business leaders what they've made of the morning, and what policy changes we can make locally and regionally to drive the change needed. We'll also look at how to work for national policy changes where needed. You won't need to be a policy wonk, we'll have three+ you can quiz.
Info: A light buffet lunch, which will be lovely - promise!
