This comprehensive workshop is designed to outline the assessment process required to identify the postural needs of children and adults, with special emphasis placed on the value of the “hands on” assessment, and how to use this information to support the assistive technology prescription process. We’ll provide the practical tips and tricks to make you much more comfortable in the assessment process, and you’ll gain skills and confidence to introduce 24-hour postural care strategies both in wheelchair seating and while resting outside the wheelchair.
This interactive course will:
• Build confidence in assessing appropriate body shapes; gain skill in MAT assessments
• Increase understanding of how to manage existing changes in body shape to prevent worsening contractures and promote comfort.
• Translate assessment findings into practical trial equipment selection across sitting, standing and lying systems through use of case studies and exploration of AT solutions.
• Support learning for new therapists, whilst also encouraging problem solving and clinical reasoning for those clinicians experienced in seating and positioning.
We will address:
• The assessment process and the similarities in the approach across paediatric and adult populations.
• Critical components in wheelchairs and seating systems to maximize health, posture and function
• Creating genuine seating and mobility solutions in the real world – considering patient desires, abilities and funding
The day will consist of two parts:
* AM 9:00am-12:00 noon: we will explore the initial information gathering and hands on assessment process, including MAT assessments with the opportunity to practice.* Lunch break from 12:00 noon - 1:00pm (light lunch and beverages provided)* PM 1:00pm - 4:00pm: this will provide the opportunity to put our information gathering into practice with the use of case studies to support the exploration and implementation of assistive technology with the opportunity to play and explore equipment solutions.* This APT session qualifies for (6) CPD hours.
