British History: Britain and the EU, 1990-2020

From 1990 to 2020, Britain’s relationship with Europe went through decades of cooperation, controversy, and change. From deeper integration within the EU, to debates over sovereignty and identity, and finally to the Brexit referendum and its consequences, this period reshaped Britain’s politics, society, and economy. This course will guide you through these turning points and explore why the question of “Britain and Europe” has been so central to modern British history.

This course will be led by Dr. Alexandre Loktionov, a distinguished scholar with profound academic expertise. He is currently a Research Fellow at Christ’s College, as well as a Research Fellow at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research and the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies at HSE University in Russia.

In the course, Dr. Alex will lead us to explore and reflect on:

• Why has Europe always been such a divisive issue in British politics?
• What social and cultural divides were revealed by the Brexit vote?
• What lessons can we draw from the ups and downs of Britain’s ties with the EU?
